Linguistics is, according to Merriam-Webster, "the study of human speech including the units, nature, structure, and modification of language." It is important to note that linguistics deals with the analysis of any language, not just English.
A lot of ground is covered in linguistics. Some topics include: the evolution of language, how do languages differ from each other, the structure of human languages, dialects, speech acts, pronunciation, historical linguistics, and even informal topics like "made-up" languages, puns, and how the internet has influenced our language.
In the next few entries, I will talk about the sounds that make up language (phonetics), what certain letter combinations are allowed in the English language and how that compares to other languages.

My native language is Macedonian and currently I'm studying English Language and Literature, I hated the linguistic subjects at first, they were doing my head in and the teachers weren't very inspiring but rather narrow minded... When I started reading about linguistics from a philosophical and social point of view it became more intriguing and I changed my approach so now I am having a hard time trying to decide whether to focus my study on linguistics or literature...
True, we're going away from language but it's true that having linguistics skills helps us a lot to understand many things.

Usually in linguistics three major subdivisions can be distinguished, although there are differences of opinion in the classification. About the Linguistics and Applied Linguistics as two of these areas, there is general agreement. But usually there are academic criteria that decide if it is assumed as a third branch either a comparative or historical linguistics linguistics.
Bessarabia (Basarabia Romanian, Ukrainian Бессарабія) is a historical region in Southeastern Europe, bordered by the Black Sea in the south and the rivers Prut and Dniester river in the west to the east. The former Bessarabia today largely coincides with the part lying west of the Dniester Moldovan, only the south (Budschak) and the far north (to Hotin) belong to Ukraine. For centuries the land buffer area between the great powers, Austria, Russia and the Ottoman Empire. The area designation was created in 1812 as the principality of Moldavia ceded the sovereignty of Russia. After that the majority of Romanians occupied land by 1917 as part of Bessarabia province of Tsarist Russia. 1918 Bessarabia was for a short independent before it was in the interwar period to the eastern province of Romania and after the Second World War, a country of the Soviet Union.

Applied linguistics as a discipline, is an area that was specially developed throughout the twentieth century in the context of English-speaking countries like the United States, Britain and Australia, especially from the need to teach English to foreigners.
According to the Symposium of the American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL) held in St. Louis in February 2001 [1] the history of the sport in North America can be divided into four stages from 20's to 90 and by Angelis, [2] is possible to speak of applied linguistics with American identity.
On the other hand, Australia has developed its own contribution to the development of applied linguistics which differs from the U.S. and Britain. Australian linguists in the twentieth century focused more on applying this discipline to modern languages and the language of the immigrants, who studies English. [3] However, the Australian applied linguistics is most strongly influenced by European and American than British.
During the 1950 and 1960 focused on specific errors and contrastive analysis. During the 1970's, with the failure of this method of contrast analytical and theory to predict errors in applied linguistics began to adopt the theory of Noam Chomsky about Universal Grammar to explain the phenomenon of learning a second language. In 1990, a growing number of researchers began to use methods of study based on cognitive psychology.
Today, this field of interdisciplinary study is a mixture mainly of linguistics, anthropology, psychology and education.
The International Association of Applied Linguistics is a forum that covers a broad spectrum of researchers in this area.
Some publications in this area include Studies in Second Language Acquisition, Modern Language Review, Language Learning, Applied Linguistics, AILA TESOL Journal and the Journal.
The tradition of applied linguistics is established as a response to the specialization of linguistics with the advent in the late 1950's of generative linguistics and has since remained an important social role that demonstrates the central interest in the problems of language.
