Common English misspellings and errors

Here are some English words which are commonly misspelled and/or mispronounced. Words that appear in red are considered incorrect.

mischievous: This words is pronounced with 3 syllables and does NOT rhyme with "devious", but is often heard with an extra "i" added, as in mischievious.

realtor: Another case of an extra syllable popping in, it is not pronounced realator.

nuptial: Pronounced using 2 syllables only, not 3 as in "nuptual". The -ual ending is prevalent in English, so it is only natural that this word is commonly mispronounced.

espresso: Is it made expressly for you? Or is it made at express speed? Nope, we are used to words starting with ex- so we also apply it here incorrectly. Its misuse is so common that even some dictionaries are starting to list expresso as an entry.

Dear Linguistics Zone.

I have been reading your blog for something like two weeks. It is interesting and you have been doing a good blog.

But I must say you have a misconception about what linguistics is. You are writing a blog about the good usage English language. It is nice, but it is not linguistics. I am a freshman linguitics student at University of Campinas, in Brazil, (I don't have a blog, yet) and I can tell you linguistics is not grammar. It is a very deep scientific study of the language (not just a language, but also the phenomenon of language), concerning all its formal, structural, psychological and social aspects. It is a science just like chemistry, biology or physics.

There are many fields and scientific schools in Linguistics. You can have a sociolinguistic study analysing the diffences among the varieties of a language used by the different social classes somewhere. Psycholinguistics study the relationships between the language and the thought. Descriptive linguistics, study how to describe (and also describes) the languages spoken in the world. Other schools, like generative grammar, try to elaborate a logical grammar description to be applied to every single the language. Neurolinguists study how the language works inside the human brain. And, of course, historical linguistics study the changes of languages through the history (how Old English became English and how Latin became romance languages).

Linguists take an unpassionate scientific look over language. They don't utter opinions. While you say "should only be used colloquially and hopefully never become actual words", a linguist would just say: "they are more common in colloquial language. It is possible that they become, in the future, accepted in standard English and it doesn't depend whether I like it or not". By the way, "actual words" is not a good term. "Diff" and "refi" are actual words in a certain variety of English. They are not very used in Standard English, but no one can't say that they are "false" or "imaginary" words, can you? Not that you are not allowed to have an opinion. You can think these words are ugly, but you can't allow these opinions to interfere with your study. Whether ugly or beautiful, some people talk them and that's the reality a linguist have to describe.

If you think it can be interesting, you could take a look on a few books. Sociolinguistics, an introduction, by Peter Trudgill is a very pleasant and interesting introduction to sociolinguistics and linguistics itself. A tougher book but yet written in plain English is "A Course in General Linguistics", by Ferdinand de Saussure, considered a father of linguistics.

This is what I had to say about it. Keep working, but try to take a deeper look on it. Actual linguistics is a very interesting study of language and, as a science, there are many things to do. I assure you, it's much more interesting than teaching ortography.

Regards,

José San Martin

OMG. I've been guilty of misspelling some of these.

This blog is really very useful and interesting. What about spelling, some of theese words may cause difficults but for educated person it's nothing difficult

Anonymous said...

People should proof their articles in MS Words to fix the misspelling, before publishing the article to the internet.

Beside, many online text editor in the internet already have built-in spelling checker, like Blogger's commenting engine.

So actually, the chance for making mistakes like this is slim. It only happen when people get careless.

I'll be honest that I'm not as good as others in English written or oral. That's why your blog is very helpful for me. Thanks!

In order not to commit these kinds of mistake when your writing articles, use the check spelling and grammar of MS word or try to google it to really check if it's right or wrong. This is the only way that you can minimize these mistakes since these mistakes are usually caused by typing error. Anyway, thanks for sharing this!

The Comedy of Errors (engl. The Comedy of Errors) is a play by William Shakespeare, written 1592-1594. Presumably, this is the first comedy of the playwright. A Quartoausgabe does not exist. Thus, it appears to have been the first time in the Folio edition of 1623 to be published. The earliest documented performance of the comedy of errors took place on 28 December 1594 in Gray's Inn, a London lawyer school instead.

The plot of the comedy of errors follows closely on the comedy of ancient Roman authors Plautus Menaechmi. Shakespeare doubled compared to the original of Plautus the twin theme.

South Africa, in long form the Republic of South Africa is a country located at the southern tip of Africa. It is bordered to the north by Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and north-east with Mozambique and Swaziland. Lesotho is to share a landlocked state in South African territory. Its administrative capital is Pretoria, the legislative capital Cape Town and Bloemfontein the judicial capital.

South Africa has more than 50 million people (according to census estimates for 2010 [2]) divided into 79.4% of blacks, whites 9.2%, 8.8% of Métis and 2, 6% of Asians [3]. Nation phenotypes varied, South Africa and Africa is the country with the largest portion of people called "colored" white and Indian. South Africa is often called "nation rainbow sky", a concept coined by Archbishop Desmond Tutu to describe the diversity of the South African nation which has replaced the concept of plural society previously used in ideology séparationniste of apartheid (1948-1991).

South Africa is characterized by large mineral wealth (gold, diamonds, coal, etc..) That made it indispensable to the West during the Cold War and a large population of European descent. South Africa is the economic powerhouse of Africa. The economy of South Africa is indeed one of the more highly developed and benefits from modern infrastructure throughout the country.

The name "Republic of South Africa" took the place of the Union of South Africa May 31, 1961 when the country ceased to be a British dominion.

The Fatal Conceit (in the English original The Fatal Conceit: The Errors of Socialism) is the latest book by economist Friedrich Hayek, which ventures into the field of sociology trying to propose an explanation of the development of society, law and the economy. Hayek discusses how constructivist attempts to promote values, ideals and prices (from "above") not take into account the historical processes of development, such as dispersed knowledge and spontaneous order, in what he calls a "fatal conceit " of the central planning where planners arrogantly believe that the information you have is all existing information, with fatal results for companies.

Excellent blog. One thing I find myself increasingly irritated at nowadays is the practice of posting comments on website forums in all lowercase letters. This is a common practice in text messaging and I find that it is spilling over into all aspects of posting. Abbreviations that are used in text messaging are also being used in all types of posts. I fear English teachers are going to have a difficult time overcoming some of these bad habits that are becoming so common.

Realator. Really? As useful as Word is with spelling mistakes it's useless with grammatical errors. And while we're on that topic who actually determines what's correct and incorrect when it comes to grammar anyway? There are so many dialects who is to say who is correct? Isn't the point of communication to be understood?

This is really interesting. There is a huge difference between pronouncing incorrectly and spelling incorrectly. Words should be spelled correctly no matter what but it often depends on where you are from as to how your pronounce them, so different pronunciations are not necessarily incorrect.
