How languages increase their vocabulary

There are multiple ways that a language can increase its vocabulary, or acquire new words.

1. Derive a word from existing word(s)

This is commonly done by adding prefixes or suffixes to words, or by changing a word's figure of speech.

Example: The prefix cyber-, as in cyberspace.

2. Borrow a word from another language

In the past 100 years, English has accepted words from over 100 languages. English has actually borrowed more words from French during the last century than from any other language. Conversely, the French are not as receptive to borrowing words from English. However, one Americanism, the term OK, is acceptable almost everywhere.

Examples: taco (from Spanish), ciao (from Italian), klutz (from Yiddish)

3. Create an entirely new word

This is quite rare, but in some cases an entirely new word is created which is not based on forming words from another familiar word.

Examples: zap, quark, nerd

John - Excellent piece.
Have you noticed the 'words' that are used by the media? I'm speaking of words that they make up or words that are bastardized? It's rampant.
Under your heading of creating an entirely new word, you could add 'grok'. As you might already know, it's from Robert Heinlein's book - A Stranger In A Strange Land -
To grok (pronounced GRAHK) something is to understand something so well that it is fully absorbed into oneself.

i have just read 1948 by Orwell and it sounds like horror the killing of the English language and creation of "New Speak". but still i am not in to slang, it is just as cruel i think

Thanks for the comments.

I do agree that sometimes too many words are created that are unnecessary. Often times these are 'buzzwords' created by marketing people to boost sales/hype their products.

As you can see from today's post, the internet has provided us with a whole new avenue to bastardize the English language.

The process of turning one language into something completely different is inevitable and it is not that bad of a thing. Maybe one day all the people in the world will be talking in just one language - a mix of English, Spanish, German and god knows what other language.

Yes, French really aren't that tolerant with words coming from other languages. I've read that they have a kind of language comity that takes each and every new word from any other language and creates a French term for the thing the word means so they can keep the language 'clean'. Nice, hah?

Belarusians live mostly in urban areas; most major cities are Minsk (capital), Minsk, Hrodna, Mogilev, Brest, Vitebsk and Bobruisk.

The country, a vast plain to the continental climate, is covered by the third forest, it is in some places unchanged since prehistoric times (primary forest) and is home to animal species extinct in the rest of Europe. The main resources of the country, poor subsoil, are agriculture and industry.

If the former Polesie is a historical region formerly part of major powers such as the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Russian Empire, today's Belarus is a young state. Belarusians took no real awareness of their uniqueness in the nineteenth century and were not recognized by the world when their country became a republic of the USSR.

Belarus has been independent since the dissolution of the USSR in 1990. Relations with Russia are very close, however, countries sharing a common language, Russian (Belarusian is spoken in Belarus anecdotal, although, surprisingly, it is often used in writing for signaling road or in museums). Belarus has not experienced the brutal and violent liberal economic reform experienced by its neighbor Russia in the 1990s, its industry and agriculture, rather then developed compared to the rest of the USSR, was largely preserved (including the manufacture of tractors, refrigerators and cattle), and inequality have not exploded as in Russia. Since July 2010, Russia and Belarus (and Kazakhstan) have formed a customs union, including abolishing checks at their common borders.

Relations with the rest of the international community, however, are much more mixed, partly because an election away from democratic principles and the systematic arrest of many political opponents.
