Foreign expressions misinterpreted? ~ The Linguistics Zone

Foreign expressions misinterpreted?

When English borrows certain expressions or phrases from other languages, we are sometimes not used to those expressions and have some trouble spelling or pronouncing them.

Here are some examples of expressions that originated in French that are now used in English:

tout de suite: "Right away" or "at once". Often misinterpreted as "toot sweet" (shown in the above picture), it refers to something that must be done right away.

Example: You need to be at the meeting tout de suite.

faux pas: Means "false step" in French. Refers to a blunder, error, or foolish mistake.

Example: If you add fake information to your portfolio, you've committed a faux pas.

voilà: Means "look there!" or "behold!" It is pronounced "vwala" but you shouldn't write it that way! Often used as an attention grabber and also indicates that something is finally done.

Example: Just finish mixing all the ingredients, and voilà!

In fact the French tend to ignore the "de" and say toute suite.

I rather like when the "same" word can mean completely different, contradictory things within or across languages.

Example: the Thai language is tonal, which is "death" for most westerners. The word "suuai" with a rising tone means beautiful. The same word with a descending tone means bad luck. Can be embarrassing if u are trying to compliment a beautiful woman.

Example: this is bit non-PC but it's fun. The word "prik" in Thai means chili. I don't think I need to spell out the meaning in English!

Nice entry! It almost read like an extended etymology of these words.

I've used the word voila and have seen the word written but I never put the two together.

The fun part about using a language that is such a mix of other languages. Very little makes sense :)

intresting, would not have thought about it that way myself.

My favorite is Depot, and is interesting that some people pronounce the t at the end but that is not correct.

I noticed that those French words are the ones that make it hard for some to pronounce.

That happens all the time with languages when we borrow some words or phrases from others... happens the same in Spanish when we try to use some other expressions especially with French and English

partially remember a book I read on black/white communication and the misinterpretation of meaning, though it was mostly the nonverbal communication. Also, middle class blacks tended to communicate more like white. One difference was the length of the pauses between speakers. That wouldn't necessarily lead to conflict, but perhaps misinterpretation of the person speaking.

When it comes to mastering the art of the well-chosen word in the realm of another language, false friends underline the old adage "never assume." Therefore a network of native speakers is indispensable to the language learner. Quirino Majorana undertook a series of very accurate experiments to screen the gravity from 1918 to 1922. Majorana experiments showed, in his view that mercury and lead, act as a shield and weaken the gravitation of the earth easily. However, his result could not be reproduced today (an exact reproduction of the exact experimental setup of Majorana but not yet available). It was also argued that a possible shielding if it exists, is orders of magnitude must be less than Majorana has measured it, else there would be conflicts with various astronomical facts. [1] Based on current information contradicts any shielding of the gravitational equivalence principle General relativity theory of Albert Einstein, which was previously confirmed in all experiments.

Majorana was skeptical about the theory of special relativity and tried to 1918-1919, to refute the postulate of the constancy of the speed of light. He succeeded but not what led to his experiments were a mainstay of the SRT. [2] [3] Majorana confirmed as Newton's law of gravity with great accuracy.

The aim of the history of science is to trace the historical origin and development of sciences and their respective disciplines. For this purpose it uses inter alia the methods of historical research. Here are scientists engaged in science, history, and often even from the discipline they work in history. History of science appears as a historical part of the relevant scientific discipline.

In addition to the history of scientific theories and discoveries can also further topics to be content of the history of science: for example, biographies of selected scientists and scientifically significant expeditions, or the development of scientific journals, publishers, collections and organizations. The history of scientific training and qualifications systems falls into the realm of science. More recent approaches deal primarily with the practical dimensions of science (practical turn), with their objects, representations and instruments and to the social dimensions of scientific practice.

On many issues the history of science can lead to strong overlap with the general historical research, technology, history, philosophy of science and the sociology of science. For this reason, often inherited from the Anglo-American designation STS (science, technology & society) is used, which emphasizes, in contrast to names like history of science, or history of science, the width of the examined subject area.

Turanoceratops (Turania horned face ") is a genus of one species of dinosaur cerapodo ceratopsids, who lived in the late Cretaceous period, about 65 million years in the Maastrichtian. Found in Central Kyzyl Kum, Dzharakuduk Desert, Uzbekistan Turanian platform. The holotype consists of a left maxilla with teeth, nasal horn, predentario, partial parital squamous base of the skull, vertebrae, partial and probably the distal portion of the scapula. Turanoceratops a small neoceratosauriano provides important evidence that the appearance of the jaws and teeth twice rooted predentarios ceratopsians appeared earlier in Asia than in North America [1]. Turanoceratops ceratopsian belongs to a group of herbivorous dinosaurs with parrot beak that vivierno in Asia and North America during the upper Cretaceous to the end of the dinosaur era. Turanoceratops, like all ceratopsians, was a herbivore. During the Cretaceous, flowering plants erestaban "geographically limited on the territory" and is as likely that this dinosaur fed on the predominant plants in that era: ferns, cycads and conifers. Would have used its sharp beak to bite off the leaves or needles.

A 2009 study led by Hans-Dieter Sues where additional material Turanoceratops analyzes and concludes that, contrary to expectations, is a true member of Ceratopsidae. If this is correct, the only ceratopsids represneta Asia, all otors miembrtos of this family belong to America. [1] Some scientists, like Andrew Farkas, are not in agreement with reports Sues. Farkas and colleagues in a phylogenetic analysis of new remains of Turanoceratops lso found that is a close relative of Ceratopsidae but not a member of this clade. [2] and Alexander Averianov criticised Sues That analysis, Arguing That Farka and colleagues misinterpreted or mis-coded Some Characteristics of the fossil in Their analysis
