Extra syllables and lengthening of words ~ The Linguistics Zone

Extra syllables and lengthening of words

In contrast to lengthening words and making abbreviations, some speakers have made a habit of throwing in extra syllables to words. See the table below for some examples.

Notice the words in column 2 have an extra, often unnecessary syllable added to it.

1 2
preventive preventative
oriented orientated
interpret interpretate

While the entries in the 2nd column have still made their way into the dictionary, it really isn't the preferred way of saying the word. I've found these over-syllabified words are often used by those who are in the marketing business and will speak them to sound more technical (I'm really tired of hearing "object orientated language"!).

Hi! I enjoy your blog also. I'm a writer/editor, and I like learning languages too, so linguistics is very interesting to me. I always cringe when I hear someone say "orientate." I'm saddened to find out it's made its way into the dictionary. Oh well. C'est la vie! LOL

Oops. I forgot to leave my blog information. I have a writing blog (more or less), and it's http://www.crayonwriter.com I'll be back to visit again, though!

Or they will say them that way if they're ENGLISH, and not American.. 'English' being the correct way, if I'm not mistaken. ;-)

Austin Bob said...

Shouldn't that be "over-sylabificated words"?

Anonymous said...

I was over joyed when I found your site. Someone who can actually 'speak' the English language - no reference to non-English speaking bloggers. I find it incredulous that most television news casters, newspaper and magazine reporters as well as public speakers 'butcher' our language - and what's more incredible is that I am sure they don't even realize they're doing so. How sad.

Anonymous said...

OK, but isn't there a name for this phenomenon? Do you know the term for sticking an extra syllable into a word? Sort of the opposit of haplollogy, I suppose?

Anonymous said...

Shouldn't that be "over-sylabificated words"?

Anonymous said...

Once, I even heard someone say "limitATE" instead of "limit." Don't you just hATE it when someone has to put insert that inappropriate -ATE syllable where it doesn't belong (just link "masonARY" instead of "masonry") "Again and time," I hear people abuse the English language this way.

(or is that "again and again" or "time and time" or "time and something"? If "Again" is an adverb, how does it go with the conjunction "And?"

The next time you hear someone say "orientATE," you might care to ask, "how do you spell that?" If that doesn't work, maybe "Ate? You ate what?" will do the trick. In any case, you should avoid getting too irATE over such language goofs.

It is usually in some kind of leather lining material, and Coach Luggage has a nice looking stamp. Serial numbers if Coach Madison are generally a cool combination of letters and numbers. If you know this information, you'll be able to find a fake Coach Poppy and yell at the owner.

should there should be a distinction between adding a syllable and lengthening of a word? the 2nd column would be lengthening, while adding a syllable would be prevalent only in pronunciation? For example,if I were to pronounce assured as a-shur-ed rather than a-shurd.
If this is not what it really means to ad a syllable, is there any term for this?
